Route: Windhoek – Twyfelfontein – Windhoek
Day 1 (Twyfelfontein)
After picking up all guests from as early as 6 am in Windhoek we shall depart for Twyfelfontein at 7 am. We expect to reach our lodge around the afternoon. Soon after checking in, the tour will take us on our first discovery journey to the petrified forest which is located right along the C39 road. The Petrified Forest is a deposit of large tree trunks that have turned to stone (petrified), over millions of years. It is believed that the trees were once swept downstream by a large flood and got covered by piles of alluvial sand. Deprived of air, the trees (although being organic matter) could not rot and decay, but instead, became fossilized. With erosion, these fossilized trees later came to earth’s surface. On this tour, we will also experience the Welwitschia plant which is abundantly found in this area. Native only to Namibia and Angola, this plant enjoys a great reputation for its desert adaptation skills and impressive longevity of up to one thousand years. After the tour, we will return to the lodge for dinner and some free time to just relax and enjoy the serene environment.
Day 2 (Twyfelfontein, Brandberg)
Today our journey leads to the Twyfelfontein, the fountain from which this area got its name. Of the fountains of Namibia Twyfelfontein is one of the last remaining ones which still has water streaming live out of it albeit its surrounding semi-desert environment. The place also has a rich history preserved through rock painting and is a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2007. After Twyfelfontein we will visit the ‘organ pipes’. These are interesting rock formations that comprise a group of columnar basalts which resemble organ pipes. They are believed to have been formed about 150 million years ago by underground lava which had crystallized over the years and got exposed to earth’s surface. As we proceed on our tour we will learn that this part of Namibia must have been exposed to some volcanic activity in its history. This we shall see clearly from our visit to the Brandberg mountain (“the burnt mountain”), not far from the ‘organ pipes’. The Brandberg is believed to have similarly resulted from a solidified lava flow about 80 million years ago. The ridges to which it belongs are one of the tallest in the country, with Brandberg itself being the tallest mountain in Namibia. Lunch will be served at the Twyfelfontein restaurant after our morning tours. This double-story restaurant with its beautiful African style set-up provides an outstanding view across the landscape from the dining area. After lunch, we will visit more attractions in the area including the Damara living museum known for showcasing one of the ancient cultures of this area. After touring the area we will head back to our lodge in time for dinner.
